Map of the Rappahannock River and Surrounding Region in Virginia
Many historical sites associated with the Hackley family are to be
found in close proximity to the Rappahannock river. In the early years, settlement
followed the river westward. In this map, the Rappahannock
river flows roughly northwest forming the border between Fauquier County on the north
and Culpeper and Rappahannock Counties on the south.
Summerduck Run is a small creek
which flows south into the river. James Hackley's 1724 Northern Neck land grant was
located on the western side of Summerduck.
Hackley's Crossroads is in Rappahannock County,
and derived its name from James Hackley (ca.1742-ca.1822), son of James (ca.1691-1748) of Summerduck, who settled his
family there around 1797.
Oak Shade is a small village in the Little Fork, and is the area in which
William S. Hackley (1827-1913) was born and raised, and in which his father James (ca.1804-1884) farmed
and milled.
