The real Hackley's X Roads, pictured above, is located in the rolling hills just east of the Blue Ridge mountains in Rappahannock County, Virginia. This rural intersection took its name from James Hackley and his family who settled there in 1797 after following the Rappahannock River west from eastern Fauquier and Culpeper counties. An ordinary, or inn, that was run by Burkitt Hackley during the mid-1800's, still stands on the southwest corner. Many Hackleys in Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Missouri and elsewhere can trace their roots to this family, whose ancestors first arrived on Virginia shores from England more than 300 years ago.
This collection of web pages summarizes my knowledge of the Hackleys and their allied families. A second principal surname plays a prominent role in this history...the Ridgways, also of English descent, established themselves in Maryland during the late 1600s, and eventually migrated west to Virginia's Shenandoah Valley. The web site contains brief histories of these two principal families, with numerous photographs, maps and original documents. The site also has an extensive genealogical database containing the results of my own research efforts, as well as the descendants of John Hackley of Old Rappahannock Co. The latter individuals were extracted from an unpublished manuscript written by Woodford B. Hackley. Finally, I have added a web page that highlights some of the more famous and prosperous relatives of the Hackley family during Virginia's early history.
Some related surnames that I am currently researching include CLAPSADDLE, FOLEY, HARRELL, RILEY, SCHAEFER, STROTHER, VAN HOOF, and WISSMANN.
I place a great emphasis on accuracy and documentation, but I offer no guarantees.
